Barmeath Castle dates back to the 15th Century. In the late 17th century the building was extended and fine Georgian interiors were commissioned . The well-respected Thomas Wright was commissioned to create the romantic gardens that we can still enjoy today. His designs include the lake, Island, Rock Bridge, the Hermitage and the Shell House.
Patrick 1st, Lord Bellew, enlarged and embellished this house in the 1830s. Lord Bellew used Sir Thomas Smith as his architect: his designs included an entrance tower with a portcullis, which also served as a portecorchere. Patrick Bellew was the fourth generation to marry heiresses and that wealth combined with his interest in his Norman ancestry inspired him to create such a flamboyant and impressive castle.
